Nowhere is that more apparent than in 的 voting booth, yet for 的 majority of our nation's history—and still to this day—tens of thousands of our citizens are disenfranchised. In this powerful image from our exhibition “缅因州的故事：不完整的历史”, Penobscot Nation’s Princess Watawaso (Lucy Nicolar Poolaw) casts 的 first vote on a reservation in Old Town, Maine, in 1955. It is a key moment in our history that we must hold onto, as it sheds light on 的 centuries-long marginalization 和 oppression of indigenous communities in Maine 和  across 的 country, 和 serves as an important reminder to fulfill America's promise for all. . To me, this voice, this sense of 的 journey, in art, is to bring clarity to that which is unclear.” – David C. Driskell at last year’s 尼尔森社会正义讲座 David Driskell made a career 和 life for himself that was exceptional 和 singular, ensuring 的 work of black artists could not be ignored by white audiences, art institutions, 和 officials. We have known very few people who thought more deeply 和 showed more conviction about how to be present in 的 world than Driskell, 和 we honor him today on what would have been his 89th birthday. At 的 time of his passing, Driskell had been working with 的 PMA on 的 retrospective David Driskell: Icons of Nature 和 History, opening June, 2021. Though he will not be with us to see it, his voice, intention, 和 perspective were 的 backbone of what will certainly be a remarkable exhibition. We are thankful for him every day, 和 miss our friend dearly.
